Pizza ordering

How Much Pizza Should You Order?

Estimate pizza quantities using guest count, appetite, slice size, side dishes and a sensible buffer.

Pizza planning works better when you estimate slices rather than simply ordering one pizza for every few people. A large thin pizza, a deep pan pizza and an individual Neapolitan pie are not equivalent. Start with the restaurant’s actual cut count and adjust for the group.

Begin with a slice estimate

A common starting point is two to three conventional slices per adult and one to two per younger child. Teenagers, athletes and guests eating pizza as the only main dish may eat more.

Adjust for the pizza style

Deep dish, stuffed, Detroit and thick pan slices are more filling. Very thin party-cut squares are smaller and easier to keep eating. Ask the restaurant how many adults its sizes normally feed.

Account for other food

Substantial salads, wings, pasta or desserts reduce pizza demand. Small dips and a bowl of chips usually do not.

Use a modest buffer

An extra 10 to 15 percent is often enough for uncertainty. Ordering an entire extra large pizza for a small group can create avoidable cost and waste.

Plan special pizzas separately

Do not count a gluten-free or vegan pizza as general inventory if only one guest can eat it. Reserve enough for that person before others sample it.

Work backwards from the restaurant’s actual pizza

If a shop cuts an 18-inch pie into eight very large slices, three slices per adult is excessive for many groups. If it cuts a thin 14-inch pie into twelve narrow slices, three may be modest. Ask for size and cut count, then use the calculator with those numbers.

A sample calculation

For six adults and two younger children, three slices per adult and two per child produces twenty-two slices. Adding ten percent gives about twenty-five slices. At eight slices per large pizza, round up to four large pizzas. Thick sides or Detroit-style squares may justify reducing that order.
