How to Freeze Leftover Pizza

Freeze individual pizza slices with protective wrapping so they separate easily and reheat with less freezer damage.

Freezing is useful when you know refrigerated slices will not be eaten soon. Individual wrapping makes it possible to reheat only what you need.

Cool and freeze promptly

Do not use freezing to rescue pizza that has already sat out too long. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours, then freeze once cooled.

Pre-freeze if toppings are loose

Place slices on a tray until firm, then wrap. This helps preserve toppings and prevents slices sticking together.

Wrap against air

Use freezer-safe wrap or bags and remove excess air. Add a second barrier for longer storage.

Label style and date

A label is especially useful when several kinds of pizza look similar once frozen.

Reheat from frozen or thaw safely

Thin slices can often go directly into a hot oven. Thick slices may warm more evenly after thawing in the refrigerator.

Choose slices that will freeze well

Conventional cheese, pepperoni, pan and Detroit-style slices generally freeze predictably. Fresh greens, uncooked tomato, creamy drizzles and delicate herbs may be better removed and replaced after reheating.

Avoid repeated temperature cycles

Take out only the number of slices you intend to use. Repeated thawing and refreezing damages texture and can create unsafe handling if food spends too long warm.
