The cardboard box is convenient for carrying pizza, but it is bulky in a refrigerator and does little to protect slices from drying or absorbing odours. Transfer leftovers promptly once the meal is finished.
Refrigerate within two hours
Health Canada advises refrigerating or freezing leftovers within two hours. In hot conditions, act sooner. Do not leave pizza out overnight.
Use shallow storage
Place slices in a shallow covered container or stack them with parchment between layers. Shallow storage helps food cool more quickly than a tightly packed deep stack.
Separate delicate toppings
Remove fresh greens, cold sauces or other toppings that will not reheat well. Store them separately when practical.
Label the date
A simple date label prevents guessing. Health Canada advises eating refrigerated leftovers within two to three days or freezing them.
Keep the refrigerator cold
Store leftovers at 4°C (40°F) or below and avoid overpacking the refrigerator so cold air can circulate.
Why the box is a poor long-term container
Cardboard allows air exchange and occupies a large amount of refrigerator space. It can also absorb moisture and odours. A sealed shallow container or carefully wrapped slices provides more consistent protection and makes the date easier to see.
Arrange slices for the next reheating method
If you expect to use a skillet, store conventional slices flat so toppings remain in place. For oven reheating, a small stack with parchment between slices is fine. Separate deep-dish wedges so they do not deform while cold.
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Use a covered shallow container | Leaving slices in an open box for days |
| Refrigerate promptly | Waiting until bedtime after a long party |
| Date the container | Relying on smell alone |
| Freeze what will not be eaten soon | Repeated warming and cooling |
